  • Note: "(...) In short, I consider this to be an excellent book that should set the standard for computer networks just at the Hennessy-Patterson texts have done so for computer architecture. I will now motivate my enthusiasm for the project. First, the timeliness of computer networks as an academic topic is unquestionable. Just consider the massive popularization of networks that has happened over the last few years due to the Internet. The text in fact draws upon the Internet as a concrete example for many abstract concepts. It is, however, far from being yet-another-book-about-the-Internet. Its treatment of the topic is highly technical and academic, and stays clear of any trivialities. In other words, it treats the scientific foundations and the engeneering of modern computer networks, of which the Internet happens to be just an instance (albeit the most popular). Second, the diverse experiences and background of the two authors combines to give the text a unique perspective. Peterson is an extremely well-respected academician who has been an active researcher in the area for many years. Davie comes from an industrial background and has been actively involved in the design and implementation of real networks at some of the major companies. The authors have been successful in synthesizing teir perspectives into a 'systems approach' for understanding computer networks. Another unique feature of the text is the inclusion of real working code from the x-kernel to illustrate important concepts. As such, the text can easily form the basis for a course with a laboratory for hands-on experience in networking. (...) In summary, I believe that the text by Peterson and Davie gives a very competent and complete treatment of an important topic. In addition, there may be a reasonable Italian market for the text to justify a translation effort. (...)" OZALP BABAOGLU, parere sul testo, Bologna, 3 settembre 1996.
